The market of e-bikes is thriving and we would see a lot of them in 2017. The latest addition this year is probably the Airwheel R5, and surprisingly, it has everything in a small package.

The bike is foldable, runs on battery, and includes some smart features. It can be folded to a small package with the dimensions of 27.6″ x 28″ x 15″ (700mm x 710mm x 380mm), and the total weight is just about 41 lbs (18.5 kg).

Interestingly, you can pedal the bike normally, or turn to pedal-assisted mode to ride with less effort, or run it in full throttle mode like a scooter. The maximum speed of the bike is 12mph ( 20km/h) and you can ride up to 62 miles (100km) in a single charge. The battery is mounted on the back of the bike and you can easily charge it via the USB port. This is also a portable battery that you can use to charge your smartphones as well.

Another interesting feature of the bike is the companion app. After installing the app on your smartphone and connect to the bike, you will have some functionalities like fault self-diagnosis, speed settings, real-time positioning, riding data and more personal settings.

The bike is available in 2 color options, which are black and while. More details on pricing and availability will be revealed at CES 2017 in Las Vegas. If you are interested, you can follow the latest updates on their website.

  1. I am a 75 year old guy and bought one of these R5’s about a year ago, I absolutely love it.
I have been lazy and just used the electric mode on full throttle (eeeh haaar) and man it goes just great, it can tackle reasonable hills in my city and if it starts slowing right down, I just pedal as well, not very often needed though.
Now I am trying to get my weight down, I’m a fatty at 98kg, so I only use it on ‘Power Assist’ mode on setting 3, that’s just enough to help me out. It’s easily stored at home and all functions of the app work just fine for me.
In NZ it cost me $995NZ which is not that bad and I see some on TradeMe for $600 2nd hand.
It folds up into a small bundle in a flash and into the boot of the car.
It is extremely well built and I am 100% happy with it.
In some of the reviews I’ve read people complain the app doesn’t work, they must be missing something, mine is fine on my Android phone and IOS Ipod.
If you buy one, you’ll enjoy it.

  2. This bike is cheap and poorly made. The brake handle broke in my hands and the Canadian reseller does not havepartsand has not intention of carrying them. WHich effectively means the warranty is not honoured and if something breaks, there is no way of fixing it. ALso the ride is very uncomfortable.
