Performance

Schwinn is a very well-known brand for its fitness equipment products. They have produced a lot of bikes but most of them are full-size hybrid, mountain or urban bikes. The Schwinn Loop is the only folding bike available on its official website at the moment. I bought the bike 3 years ago and it really changed my opinions since then.

The Schwinn Loop has an attractive look with a low stand-over frame which is suitable for urban commuters, especially female riders. The frame seems to be made of steel and it feels very sturdy and durable. My friend bought the bike from me last year and it is still in perfect condition now although she’s ridden it almost every day.

The bike is a little clunky and heavy as compared to some newer folding bikes, but it is totally acceptable at this price. It weighs nearly 33 lbs including fenders and a rear rack. The folding/unfolding process is not really smooth. If you need to carry the bike around, you should prepare some straps to secure the wheels and handlepost because there is no locking mechanism like you see on Dahon bikes. Besides, the body hinge and handlepost hinge are also more difficult to close or open.

The Loop is equipped with a 7-speed drivetrain. This is not a fast bike but it performs well on flat roads and slopes in the city.

Conclusion

Pros

  • Attractive design with included rear rack and fenders
  • Great build quality
  • Low price
  • Good performance
  • A carrying case is included

Cons

  • Heavy and bulky
  • Inconvenient folding/unfolding process

Despite some drawbacks, the Schwinn Loop is probably the best entry-level folding bike you can buy at the moment. Moreover, it won’t break your wallet, so I totally recommend it.

  1. Hello Ricky,

Thanks for taking the time to write the review, it’s been of great help.

I was wondering whether you could help me though, I’m thinking of getting a folding bike to commute to work (perhaps the schwinn loop) but I’m worried that the schwinn loop might be too heavy for a daily commute and might not be the most suitable bike for the task?

I like how it looks and it’s apparently very strong.

Do you think it would be a good option or would you recommend something else?

    Thanks,
    Jessica

    • Hi Jessica,
I’m so glad the review is helpful.
Yes you are right. I really hated carrying the Schwinn Loop around because it is bulky and I couldn’t roll the bike when it is folded.
The Allen Sports Downtown is on sale on Amazon right now and it is $50 cheaper than the Schwinn Loop. It is a much better folding bike for daily commute, very compact and lightweight. You can check out the review here: http://www.bikefolded.com/allen-sports-downtown-folding-bike-review/
      Hope it helps.

      • Many thanks for the quick reply Ricky, it’s greatly appreciated. I’ll have a look at the Allen Sports Downtown now and get back to you with any further questions I might have.

        Thanks again!
        Jessica

  2. Yes agree, the Schwinn I think is designed to fold and stick in your closet as a space saver, which is nice, but it is heavy and awkward when folded, yes, being able to roll it when it is folded would have been a big plus, but it is not designed to do that. The storage bag they send u, forget about it, major Pia to get the bike in. That said, it does fit in your small car, it is reasonably priced, solidly made and a very decent ride. But, if you are going to be carrying your folding bike around a lot, pick a different one. The lighter the better, but of course, that makes em much more expensive.

  3. i went toe a bike shopon to have 20 inc 1.95 tires put on.the front tire is slitley hitting the front fender.what can i do.

  4. The Schwinn has been designed so that the pedals don’t move when the wheels go backward, making it not only possible to roll, but very easy. Portability is important to a lot of commuters who are work in high rise buildings or live in smaller homes where they might not have a lot of storage space for their bikes.

  5. Wish I would have gotten a lighter weight, easier to fold bike! It’s a few pounds too heavy for me! I’m 65, and it’s not easy to fold. It’s ray to unfold but not fold, and is wobbly when one 1st starts riding.

  6. Looking for a folding bike carry bag that doubles as a backpack or pannier. Purchased a Schwinn Loop and have this huge bag to carry around. Would be great if it magically doubled as a pannier.

  7. I appreciate the steel frame as I end up carrying all kinds of things on the back; shopping, work tools, kids…
We got the bike second hand, ride pretty rough, do minimal maintenance & it still seems to be holding together with no major faults🤞🏼
Would like a bigger gear to really get somewhere, but hey¿?
    It’s a cruizy ride🤙🏼
