Since its inception in 1975, Brompton has been synonymous with city cycling. Founder Andrew Ritchie designed the first Brompton folding bike with a compact design perfect for urban commuting. Their vision has shifted as Brompton finally introduced the G Line, including two small-wheel gravel bikes and one featuring electric power assist. Known for their compact folding designs, Brompton has taken a bold leap by offering a bike with larger 20-inch wheels, disc brakes, and rugged gravel capabilities, the G Line brings a fresh perspective to what a folding bike can do.

Key Features of the G Line

The G Line is built around the fold that made Brompton famous, but it integrates several new elements to create a bike ready for adventure. Here’s what makes the G Line stand out:

20-Inch Wheels and 2.1-Inch Tires: The larger wheels are a significant departure from Brompton’s traditional 16-inch wheels. The increase in size improves stability, enhances rollover, and makes the bike feel more like a full-sized model. The 2.1-inch Schwalbe G-One tubeless-ready tires are designed for grip and comfort on rough gravel paths, trails, and city streets.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes: A first for Brompton, the G Line comes equipped with hydraulic disc brakes, providing superior stopping power and control over various terrains and in diverse weather conditions.

Shimano Alfine 8-Speed Hub: The mechanical G Line comes with an integrated eight-speed hub, ensuring smooth shifting across a range of gears. This makes it ideal for everything from steep climbs to long, flat stretches.

The G Line combines Brompton’s signature folding mechanism with a design that’s optimized for off-road and gravel riding. The longer wheelbase offers a more stable ride, while wider handlebars ensure greater control, especially on rugged trails. Despite these changes, Brompton’s innovative fold remains intact, allowing riders to fold the bike in just 20 seconds into a compact size of 69h x 73l x 40w cm.

Electric G Line: Powering Your Adventure

The Electric G Line provides cutting-edge electric assist with a 250-watt rear hub motor and a 345Wh battery housed in a removable front bag. With a range of 20 to 40 miles (30 to 60 km), this e-bike version is designed for those looking to tackle both smooth city streets and more challenging off-road adventures. At 43 lbs (19.5 kg), including the battery, the Electric G Line balances power with portability.

Brompton offers a wide array of accessories specifically tailored for the G Line. Riders can add luggage racks, fenders, and a variety of bags; The flexibility to customize the bike ensures it can be adapted for a range of uses.

Pricing and Availability

The G Line will be available from October 2024 in Europe and the UK, with a U.S. release expected in spring 2025. The mechanical G Line, with an eight-speed hub, is priced at $3,160, while the Electric G Line, featuring a 4-speed configuration, will retail for $4,615. Both models will come in three color options: Forest Green, Adventure Orange, and Traildust White.

Brompton Bicycle has issued a recall for its T-Line foldable bikes in North America. This recall, affecting approximately 2,000 units sold in the U.S. and Canada, comes from reports of steering issues that could lead to a loss of control while riding.

Affected Models and Identification

The recall involves Brompton’s T-Line foldable bike, a high-end model recognized for its lightweight design and titanium frame. When folded, the bike measures 25.4 inches in height, 23.6 inches in width, and 12.6 inches in depth. It is easily distinguishable by its Blasted Titanium color and the Brompton logo printed on the center tube of the frame. Additionally, a label on the back of the vertical seat tube provides the frame and serial number, along with a distinctive “T” logo that sets the T-Line apart from other Brompton models. If your bike features the “T” logo and matches the serial numbers outlined in the recall, you should take immediate action.

The affected bikes were sold between February 2024 and June 2024 through independent bike dealers, Brompton Junction stores nationwide, and online at Brompton’s U.S. website for prices ranging from $5,225 to $5,500.

Reason for the Recall: Steering Misalignment

The recall was initiated after Brompton received 13 reports globally of steering misalignment or loss of steering control due to improper torquing of the steerer clamp bolts on the handlebar stem. In these instances, the handlebar could become misaligned with the front wheel, leading to a potential fall hazard. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported thus far.

Brompton is urging all T-Line bike owners to immediately stop using the affected bicycles to prevent any accidents. The company has already begun contacting registered owners and dealers to schedule free repairs. The necessary repair involves tightening the four steerer clamp bolts on the handlebar stem to the proper torque specification (7Nm).

Consumers have two options to resolve the issue:

Contact a Brompton Dealer: Owners can schedule an appointment at an authorized Brompton dealer for the repair. Brompton covers the full cost of the service.

Do It Yourself (DIY) Fix: For those who cannot easily access a service center, Brompton allows customers to perform the repair at home. The company advises using a calibrated torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 7Nm, ensuring the bike’s steering is properly secured.

For more details on the recall, including how to schedule your repair, visit Brompton’s official website or contact your local authorized dealer.

The bike also features hydraulic disc brakes, which deliver reliable and precise stopping power. This braking system ensures safety and control, allowing riders to confidently navigate steep descents and sudden stops.

Versatile and Practical Design

The LANKELEISI X3000 MAX is not just about power and performance; it also boasts a versatile and practical design. The bike’s frame is constructed from high-strength aluminum alloy, ensuring durability while keeping the weight manageable. The folding design is particularly noteworthy, allowing the bike to be easily transported and stored. This feature is especially useful for those with limited storage space or for riders who need to take their bike on public transportation or in a car trunk.

In addition to its folding capability, the X3000 MAX comes equipped with a range of practical accessories. These include a front and rear lighting system for enhanced visibility, a sturdy rear rack for carrying cargo, and full fenders to protect against mud and water splashes.
E-bikes and e-scooters have been growing in popularity in New York City because of their convenience and efficiency. But the lithium-ion batteries that power these devices have been associated with lethal fires, prompting the city to introduce safety regulations.

New York classifies e-bikes into three categories, all of which must have functioning pedals and a maximum speed of 25 m.p.h. Modified e-bikes that exceed this speed are illegal. E-scooters, both standing and seated, are allowed if they weigh less than 100 pounds and have a top speed of 15 m.p.h. Electric mopeds like those available from Revel are permitted, but they need state registration and a driver’s license to operate. These rules were established in 2020, even though these devices were already in use. The number of these devices in the city is unknown due to a lack of registration. Some e-mobility devices, such as skateboards, unicycles, hoverboards, and Segways, are still illegal. E-bikes and e-scooters can be used in bike lanes and on streets with speed limits up to 30 m.p.h., but mopeds are not allowed in bike lanes.

The danger of lithium batteries lies in their tendency to overheat or malfunction, leading to explosive and fast-spreading fires with little warning. In New York City this year, 14 people have died and 93 have been injured in fires caused by lithium batteries, including a fire at an e-bike store near Chinatown that killed four. The city has taken actions such as targeting unsafe battery conditions at e-bike stores, public service announcements on e-mobility hazards, and pushing for more state and federal oversight of e-mobility devices.

Effective September 16, Local Law 39 will prohibit the sale, lease, or rental of e-bikes and e-scooters, including their batteries, that don’t meet recognized industry safety standards. The city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection will enforce the law, penalizing stores, online retailers, manufacturers, and resellers of used e-bikes and e-mobility devices that sell uncertified devices. Violators can be fined up to $1,000 per uncertified device. Individuals using uncertified devices will not receive violations, and the law does not cover uncertified personal devices already owned by individuals or those purchased or leased outside the city and used within its borders.

Specific safety standards apply to each device type. E-bikes must meet the UL 2849 standard, e-scooters the UL 2272 standard, and separately sold lithium batteries for these devices must meet the UL 2271 standard. These standards require thorough testing, including subjecting batteries to overcharging, punctures, and extreme conditions. The adoption of these standards has been voluntary, and few manufacturers have chosen to test and certify their devices due to costs ranging from $30,000 to $100,000. However, since the law was approved in March, more manufacturers have pursued certification.

Mayor Eric Adams and other city officials have stressed that e-bikes and e-scooters are not being banned in New York City, as they provide a sustainable and economical alternative to cars for commuters and delivery workers. But some building owners and landlords have decided to ban all e-bikes and e-scooters from their properties, regardless of certification, adding to the confusion surrounding the new law.

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh encourages e-bike and e-scooter users to conduct safety inspections. Check for a holographic UL mark on your device and verify the safety number online to confirm its authenticity. Avoid using uncertified or refurbished batteries, mixing batteries and chargers, overcharging batteries, or leaving devices unattended while charging. Keep e-bikes and e-scooters away from exits to avoid blocking escape routes in case of a fire.

In summary, e-bikes and e-scooters have become indispensable transportation tools in New York City. While their lithium batteries have been linked to fatal fires, the city has taken measures to regulate the safety of these devices and encourage their responsible use.

True to its reputation for designing innovative and efficient bicycles, Tern has outdone itself with the BYB P10. Standing for ‘Bring Your Bike,’ the BYB P10 sets a new standard for compact folding bikes with its unique design. At a glance, it’s evident that the BYB P10 isn’t your average folding bike. Its trifold frame design with two hinges allows it to fold down to an incredibly compact size, 30% smaller than traditional Tern bikes. This design makes the BYB P10 the smallest Tern bike yet, transforming it into a package that’s only 13″ tall, 20.1 wide, and 31.9″ long when folded.

The Tern BYB P10 isn’t just a compact folding bike; it’s a solution designed for the urban lifestyle. The bike’s ultra-compact form makes it incredibly convenient for city dwellers. It can be comfortably carried onto public transit, easily fits in elevators, and can be stowed away neatly in offices, restaurants, or tiny city apartments.

Tern has also introduced the Metro Transit Rack with the BYB P10, a new feature that allows the folded bike to be rolled rather than carried. With its innovative design, the BYB P10 can be effortlessly rolled around, like a travel suitcase, making it even more convenient for urban commuting.

Uncompromised Performance

Despite its compact size, the Tern BYB P10 promises an uncompromised and grown-up ride. This innovative bike employs a variety of features to ensure a smooth and enjoyable riding experience. It is fitted with 10-speed Shimano Deore gears, providing ample range for any city ride, hill climbs or quick commutes. It also features Kinetix Pro X 20-inch wheels with Schwalbe Marathon Racer tires, guaranteeing stable handling and superior traction for a comfortable ride.

The BYB P10’s unique ‘DoubleDeck’ frame design provides an impressive level of stiffness, equivalent to Tern’s non-folding bikes, promising a steady and reliable performance. The bike is also equipped with a sturdy Physis 3D handlepost, which is four times stiffer than previous models, ensuring you remain in control at all times.

The Tern BYB P10 is an innovative step forward in the world of folding bikes. Its unique two-hinge design, combined with high-performance features, offers a portable yet reliable solution for urban mobility. By successfully balancing compactness with a comfortable and uncompromised ride, Tern has once again set the standard for the future of urban cycling. The bike will be available this fall with prices starting from £1,500 / $1,699.

Brompton has introduced the new T Line folding bike, claiming to be their lightest folding bike ever. After 3 years of R&D and building a dedicated factory in Sheffield, the T Line has finally come to life.

New Features

The frame is engineered in titanium and strengthened by orbital and tig-welding in the new factory. Then it is finished with new component and tuned in London factory. There are two models of the T Line folding bikes, which are T Line One (single speed) and T Line Urban (4 speeds). According to Will Carleysmith, Brompton’s chief design and engineering office, the bikes have been totally revamped and the only thing carried from classic model is the brake. They upgrade all components and fine all possible ways to reduce the weight. The upgrades include a new front end (fork and headset), carbon crankset, steel-armored carbon seat post, and drivetrain (derailleur, gearing options, etc.).

Brompton uses a titanium frame as it features the highest strength to density ratio, great impact strength and corrosion resistance. As the result, the T Line is among the lightest folding bikes on the market, weighing from just 7.45 kg (16.42 lbs); It is even significantly lighter than the P Line (originally known as Superlight) which weighs 9.65 kg (21.27 lbs). As compared to the original all-steel version, it weighs 37% less and it is comparable to a carbon road bike.

Despite the full front-to-back makeover, the T Line bikes still have the iconic design which folds down to a third of its size. The design is fine-tuned with new self-aligning hinges, spring-loaded handlebar catch, larger rolling wheels, and an easy-grab carbon saddle. All those details make the folding process and transportation much easier.

How to Buy the Brompton T Line

During the launch, the T Line is a super exclusive model and will be sold in-store only at NYC Brompton Junction Store. They won’t ship the bike or accept phone/online orders. There will be just 50 bikes available in the first batch; Buyers must sign up for a ballot system to have a chance to buy the new folder. Winners will need to complete the purchase on Brompton.com and pick it up in person at the NYC store. Brompton said that more US shipments could arrive throughout 2022. It will be easier to buy the bike when their factories could ramp up production volume. I really hope we could order the bikes online by then.

2020 was a terrible year for mankind due to the pandemic but it was a great year for bike manufacturers. Bicycles, both traditional and folding ones, were sold out everywhere. It was very difficult to buy an affordable folding bike during the year.

Dahon understood the situation and decided to trim profit margins when releasing the brand new Dahon HIT in 2021. This is a great chance for them to boost cycling when gyms are open with many restrictions and many people don’t want to take the risk of public transportation. Cycling is not only a convenient way to get around but also make us healthier and safer outdoors.

The Dahon HIT will be available in Asia, Europe and North America in Spring 2021. The price is expected to be less than $450. The low price point will make the folder more accessible to consumers on a budget. The bike is strengthened with Deltec cables on the front triangle and reinforced seat tube. It still uses a 6061 alloy frame like many other Dahon bikes, so the whole bike is quite lightweight at just over 26 lbs.
